Community Led Environment Action Network - CLEAN-India programme with a vision of developing cleaner environment has been embarked upon by Development Alternatives (DA), Delhi. School students spearhead this nation-wide programme on environmental assessment, awareness, advocacy and action. The funding from European Commission and technical support of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has helped to take this program forward. The Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research, Pune is the West Zonal (Pune District, Maharashtra) Center for the CLEAN-India program which consists of the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. Maharashtra includes the cities of Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur. The CLEAN-India program was initiated in Pune as CLEAN-Pune in January 2003

The objectives of the CLEAN-India programme are to :
  • Systematically assess and document the environmental quality of all major towns and cities in India. 
  • Generate awareness among citizens, decision-makers and other stakeholders in society on the causes of environmental issues and possible ameliorative action.
  • Establish vibrant network of schools, welfare associations, NGOs, media, corporate sector, scientific institution, district administrations and local government for advocacy and policy change.
  • Mobilise communities to undertake environmental improvement actions at the local level.
